Class chat persists to the recording

Every message in the live class chat is captured alongside the video. Re-watchers see the same questions and asides that the live audience saw, in time.

How it works

We listen to the LiveKit chat channel and persist every message with its sender, body, and timestamp to the session record. When the recording finishes uploading, the chat history is attached to it — no extra setup, no manual save.

In the player

  • A Chat tab sits next to Transcript in the recording player dialog.
  • Messages render in chronological order with their original timestamps.
  • Clicking a message seeks the video to that moment — handy for catching the context behind a question.
  • Hosts can hide individual messages (moderation) without deleting them from the session record.
Chat persistence is on by default. To disable it for a class, untick 'Persist chat to recording' on the class edit form before the class starts. Toggling mid-class is intentionally not supported — the live audience has already seen the messages.
